For low-budget films it often baffles me why directors choose to implement big scary monsters knowing full well it won’t look good – this same issue happens here. Speaking of the CGI, we end up talking about the budget once again. The tensions and dynamic between these characters is often quite enjoyable to watch, however a lot of my enjoyment was sadly mixed between unintentional humour (typically me laughing at the CGI), and actual gags. Every main character falls into the stereotypes all these films parade there is an arrogant “ lads”-lad, a high-status girl, a nerdy girl, and a quiet but kind-hearted boy. For one, the relationships the students have with the professor does not seem at all professional, nor is the acting of any of the main cast good enough to convince me of this fact. In many ways I am glad that the film doesn’t sensationalise archaeology the same way many others do – however, that’s not to say the film is in any way realistic. The Circle attempts to escape these pitfalls (or rather pit-wells, if you’ve seen the film you know) by having a first act partially dedicated to archaeological processes – the professor even says “ archaeology is fun” and then the next few scenes do a pretty serviceable job at showing the standard brushing, cataloguing, and sitting-around which one would find a-plenty at a dig-site. Its the go-to low-to-mid-budget horror experience which capitalises on cheap jump-scares over genuine horror, featuring bad acting and tropes galore. Yeah, I’m sure you’ve all heard this exact set-up a million times before. Surprise surprise, their trip ends in chaos as they uncover an ancient evil which stalks the land, hunting them down one by one.
